Yes, it sounds pretty odd for a tiny Asian guy like me to pursue rowing in the land of the tallest, but I am more than glad that I joined a student rowing club in Amsterdam (Skoll) during my bachelor time. It never fails to put a smile on my face every time I think about all the training sessions and races that the boys and I worked so hard for.

To me, studying abroad has never been only about stuffing my brain with academic skills and knowledge, but also about experiencing life in a different way in a different country and learning from actually BEING in the new living environment. One way of doing so for me is to get actively involved in different volunteer activities, be it for a noble cause or not.

Around a month ago I met King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands. The very next week, while hoping to visit the royal palace, I ran into King Phillippe of Belgium laying flowers at the foot of the national monument in Amsterdam. I can’t avoid royalty now!

I love reading, and coming from the US, I couldn’t bring a lot of books to read. I was worried that I would have trouble finding a good selection of English books in a Dutch speaking country. I was totally wrong! There are many, many bookstores in Amsterdam, including English language bookstores.
